Udder Catastrophe NC State Fair Game

Mechanical Systems Design

Aug 2024 - Dec 2024

For this project, our team designed a carnival-style game of skill intended for adult players. The attraction combines elements of Skee-Ball and pinball: players launch balls using a spring mechanism and attempt to land them in tiered targets on a rotating carousel. Points are awarded based on accuracy and difficulty, and high scores unlock prizes. The design emphasizes safety, repeatability, and fun, while operating entirely on battery power with no external computer required.

Goals

  • Create an interactive and engaging game of skill for adult fair-goers.
  • Combine the launch mechanics of pinball with the tiered scoring of skee-ball.
  • Ensure the system is safe, self-contained, and battery-powered.
  • Encourage replayability by displaying live scoring and high scores.
  • Incorporate an attractive aesthetic to enhance visual appeal.

Features

  • Spring-based launch mechanism that lets players control power and angle of shots.
  • Rotating 3D-printed target carousel designed in Fusion 360 with multiple tiers and varying hole sizes for different point values.
  • Automatic ball return system using angled surfaces and PVC tubing.
  • Electronics powered by Arduino, including a DC motor, ultrasonic sensor, and 7-segment score display to record player score.
  • Safety features, including the use of Nerf Rival balls, spring force limits, and enclosed netting.

Specific Contributions

  1. Proposed the original concept for the game and set the overall vision for the project.
  2. Designed the rotating target carousel and its internal mechanism for tiered scoring.
  3. Assisted with mechanical drawings and calculations, such as projectile motion and spring constant selection.
  4. Ensured compliance with safety requirements, transitioning from marbles to soft Nerf projectiles to protect fair participants.
